Gucci held their spring summer 2012 fashion show at MOCA @ dempsey just 2 weekends ago. Although held at the same location as the Chanel SS 2012 show, the collection and atmosphere presented by both labels are so different and interesting.
The inspiration for the Gucci SS 2012 collection…. ” to explore an optical side of femininity by creating a sculptural glamour for the Gucci woman” as stated by Frida Giannini . “Fusing elements from our DNA, from design history, from photography – making them current with a strong sense of personality. Louise Brookes and Nancy Cunard in the images of Man Ray. The opulence of the era of hedonism. Mirror embroidery recalling the skyscrapers of a metropolis. Artisanal working with 3D effect.”
Giannini managed her SS 2012 collection from her Seventies love affair last season to a glossy take on the roaring Twenties.
The finale of fringed gold and black cocktail dresses with Art Deco-inspired beading around their drop waist was something that made me held my breathe. A Gucci jacket (collarless and cropped) looks like a big investment next season too.
Equestrian references were mixed in via frog latches on double-breasted jackets or stripes of ochre down the side of pleat-fronted slacks. Love their collection with the mix of animal prints: black and white giraffe spots merged with leopard and zebra.
Even though the collection was Gucci in predominantly black, white and gold, there was a more light-hearted approach like: a strapless green piece had a strip of gold around the hips above a skirt of black chiffon pleats – sassy and a touch more accessible, you have your choice of pairing it with gorgeous bronze gladiator sandals or the usual killer heels.
Of course there was the old Gucci sex goddess too – in a cutaway black swimsuit, with a transparent waft of chiffon over it that was fringed to the floor, and silky dresses that plunged as low as you can go. An interesting collection for the usual spring summer I have to say..
